Food Forests & Blockchain

Saving forests from deforestation can be achieved either through land acquisition (as in the case of our Community Park campaign) or through providing income for the owners and stewards of the land. Benefits include carbon sequestration, ecological balance, wildlife habitat, fire resilience, water retention and the creation of food forests -- garden/forest hybrids that are based on permaculture, indigenous and/or other principles that tend to become increasingly self-sustaining over time, and maintain or even increase their potential for carbon sequestration.

Fund-raising is one way to achieve these benefits, but foundation grants and local philanthropy have their limits, and tend to require effort to renew and replace funding sources year after year.  An emerging alternative is to use Blockchain technology to monetize the inherent value of carbon-sequestering natural assets by connecting them to global carbon markets. This facilitates the creation of granular revenue streams that flow directly to the stewards of the land. Kolektivo and Centree are just two examples of organizations doing this kind of work, but we hope to focus it more on food production, whether that's agriculture, wild-harvesting or marine-based foods.
